Longford

Base in Launceston and give Longford one half-day for the two convict estates, or sleep one night here if you want the estates at opening.

Longford is a small Northern Midlands town of about 3,900 people, 20 minutes south of Launceston on the Midland Highway. Its reason to exist on a Tasmania itinerary is Brickendon and Woolmers, two convict-built farming estates listed as part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property. The town itself is a pub, a bakery and a main street; the estates are the trip.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

A car is the honest answer. Longford has no useful local bus to the estates, and Brickendon and Woolmers sit 2–3 km apart on either side of the Macquarie River. Drive from Launceston: Midland Highway south about 15 min, then the B52 (Illawarra Rd) exit near Perth, first roundabout into town; for the estates turn onto the C520. Taxis exist but are thin; book ahead if you are not driving.

Door to door: About 25 min

Cataract Gorge, the Tamar and the best food in the region; the natural base for this area.

Small historic town on the South Esk; combine with Longford in one loop.

Convict-era bridge and village; a good stop if you are driving to Hobart.

Bichenoovernight

Door to door: About 2 h 15 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep on the east coast instead.

Coles Bay and Freycinet

Door to door: About 2.5 h

Drive via Campbell Town and the Lake Leake road, about 2 h 15 min

Wineglass Bay walks need a full day and a night nearby.

Fine as a loop with Launceston; not worth a dedicated return trip.

Watch out

Safety

Longford is a quiet country town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are rural driving (wildlife at dawn and dusk, unsealed verges), cold wet weather any month, and long gaps between fuel and food.
  • Estate opening days are limited and can change with seasons and events: check Brickendon and Woolmers directly before you drive out.
  • House and convict tours at Woolmers run at set times, not all day: arrive for a tour slot or you may see only the grounds.
  • Kangaroos and wallabies on the C520 and Midland Highway at dawn and dusk.
  • Phone signal is fine in town but patchy on back roads; download an offline map.
  • Fuel and food are limited after about 20:00; Launceston is the fallback.
