Little Falls, MinnesotaLittle Falls

Give Little Falls one full day and one night: Lindbergh sites, the Mississippi dam and the fishing museum. Two nights only if you fish or paddle.

Little Falls is a small Mississippi River town of about 8,300 people, one of Minnesota's oldest European-American settlements, on US Highway 10 between Saint Cloud and Fargo. Its draw is the Charles A. Lindbergh boyhood home and state park, plus a compact downtown and a freshwater fishing museum. It works as a half-way stop on a US 10 drive or a single-night base for the lakes country to the north.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the sights sit 2–5 km apart along US 10 and MN 27, and sidewalks are limited outside downtown. Downtown itself is walkable in about 15 minutes end to end. No local bus network worth planning around; check whether your motel runs a shuttle.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Gateway to the lakes country; pair with a fishing or boating day.

Alexandria

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Fine as a drive, thin as a day out; better as a leg on a longer loop.

Sauk Centre

caution

US 71 and MN 28 by car

Sinclair Lewis boyhood home; a short stop, not a full day.

Walker

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

US 10 / Haven Road strip

Chain motels and the pizza place; easiest with a car, free parking.

Downtown / 1st Street SE

Walk to the visitors bureau, cafés and the river; few beds, book ahead.

Lindbergh Drive / park side

Closest to the historic site and state park campground; quiet at night.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small town; the real risks are winter roads, river currents near the dam and long empty stretches of highway at night. Lock the car and keep to lit streets downtown after dark.
  • Winter driving: US 10 and MN 371 ice over; check road conditions before setting out.
  • The Lindbergh Historic Site runs a seasonal schedule, roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day, and closes outside it: check the official site before you drive.
  • Summer mosquitoes and ticks near the river and in the state park.
  • Small-town hours: many kitchens close by 21:00 and some places shut on Sundays.
