Where to stay in Lithuania: best areas and types of hotel

Match the base to the trip, not the other way round. Vilnius carries most of the sights and the best transport links, so it suits a first visit and short breaks. Kaunas is a compact second city with its own modernist architecture and a cheaper bed. The coast only makes sense in summer, when Nida and Klaipėda fill up and prices rise.

Within each city, the choice is mostly Old Town versus new-build. Old Town means cobbles, bars and walkable sightseeing, with some noise at night. New Town and business districts mean quieter rooms, parking and chain hotels, usually 10–20 minutes on foot from the centre.

The Old Town (Senamiestis) is the default. Pilies and Didžioji streets put you between the Cathedral and the Town Hall, with the castle, museums and most restaurants within 15 minutes on foot. Rooms on the main lanes can be loud until late, so ask for a courtyard-facing room or a side street.

Užupis, across the river, is quieter and greener, 10–15 minutes from the Cathedral. It suits travellers who want a neighbourhood feel rather than a hotel strip. The station area (Stotis) is practical for early trains to Kaunas or onward buses, but it is not a sightseeing base.

New Town and Šnipiškės, north of the river, hold the newer hotels and the business district. Expect 15–25 minutes on foot to the Old Town, or a short trolleybus ride. This is the pick if you arrive by car and want parking, which is scarce and expensive in the Old Town.

In Kaunas, stay around Laisvės alėja or the Old Town, both walkable and close to the Ninth Fort bus links and the modernist interwar buildings. It is a one-night stop for most itineraries, two if you want the museums properly.

On the coast, Klaipėda is the transport hub: the ferry to the Curonian Spit leaves from the old town side, and the town itself has a compact centre. Nida, on the spit, is the place to sleep if you want dunes and lagoon views; beds are limited and July–August sells out, so book weeks ahead. Palanga is the beach-and-nightlife option, busiest in July.

Inland, Druskininkai and Birštonas are spa towns with sanatorium-style hotels and mineral water, good for a rest day. Trakai is a day trip; there are a few guesthouses, but most travellers return to Vilnius.

Hotels dominate the cities, from international chains to small Old Town properties in restored buildings. Guesthouses (svečių namai) and rural farmstays are common outside the cities and often include breakfast. Hostels are concentrated in Vilnius and Kaunas, with dorm beds and a few private rooms.

Apartments booked short-term are widespread in Vilnius and Kaunas and can undercut hotels for stays of three nights or more, especially for groups. Check the exact address and the check-in arrangement before paying, since some are self-service with no reception.

Prices are in euros. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including small guesthouses, but carry some cash for rural stays. Expect city tax on top of the room rate in Vilnius and some other municipalities; confirm the amount at booking.

June to August and the December holidays are the tight periods. For the Curonian Spit in July and August, book 4–8 weeks ahead; the same applies to Vilnius over New Year and to spa towns on winter weekends. Outside those windows, a few days ahead is usually enough, and same-day booking works in Vilnius and Kaunas in spring and autumn.

Winter is cheap but icy; check that the room has proper heating and that the entrance is cleared. Many small guesthouses on the coast close from October to April, so confirm opening dates before planning a winter coast trip.

Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda are linked by frequent trains and buses, so you can change base without a car. Trains are comfortable and cheap; buses reach smaller towns the rail network misses. If you plan to move every day or two, keep bags light and pick accommodation near the station or bus stop.

Lithuania uses the euro, plugs are types C and F at 230 V, and tipping is about 10% for good table service. Mobile coverage is good, and an eSIM or local SIM is cheap, useful for maps and booking apps. Travel insurance is worth arranging before you go, particularly if you plan cycling or water activities on the coast.
