Lithuania on a budget: daily costs and money-saving tips

Lithuania is the cheapest of the three Baltic states, and the budget is driven by three things: where you sleep, whether you eat the lunch menu, and whether you move by train or bus instead of taxi. Vilnius and Kaunas are the cheap bases. Palanga and Nida on the Curonian Spit are the expensive ones in July and August, when a dorm bed can cost what a private room costs in Vilnius in May.

Build the day around dienos pietūs, the fixed weekday lunch: soup plus a main for €7–10 in most towns, served roughly 11:00–15:00. That single habit keeps food near €12–18 a day. Dinner mains in Vilnius run €13–24, beer €4–5.5, coffee €2.5–4, so a restaurant evening pushes you into the mid-range tier.

Transport is the easiest saving. Trains and buses between Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda are cheap and frequent, and city tickets are a few euros. Bolt is useful late at night but adds up fast if you use it for every trip. For the Curonian Spit, the ferry and the car fee sit on top of your transport line in summer.

Sights are rarely the problem. Many churches, old towns and viewpoints are free; the paid items are castles and museums, and a Trakai castle ticket is about €12 (check). If you are under 30 or a student, carry proof: several museums discount, though you should confirm at the desk rather than assume.

The figures below are the ones to plan against. Treat the backpacker line as a floor, not a target: it assumes a dorm, a lunch menu and no taxis. Add a museum or a restaurant dinner and you land in the mid-range band.

Timing is the biggest lever. July and August are peak on the coast and in Vilnius; late September, October and the stretch after Orthodox Christmas into March are the cheapest months for beds, with the caveat that some seaside places close and daylight is short. The Vilnius Christmas market weeks are an exception: they are cold but not cheap.

Book the long-distance legs early. Train and bus tickets between the main cities are cheap, but the popular summer departures to Klaipėda and the coast fill up, and last-minute seats cost more or vanish. If you are heading to the Curonian Spit, price the ferry and the vehicle fee before you commit to a car.

Eat where locals eat. The lunch menu, a supermarket picnic, and a bakery breakfast cover most days for under €20. Carry a little cash for markets and small seaside kiosks even though cards and contactless work almost everywhere.

Check what your travel insurance actually covers before you rely on it for a cheap trip; a lost phone or a sprained ankle costs more than the savings from skipping a policy.
