Lilongwe is a one-or-two-night gateway, not a sightseeing city: see the wildlife centre and the central market by day, be in your lodge before dark, and leave for the lake in the morning with a driver you have booked.

The honest verdict

Lilongwe is spread out, with a market district, an Old Town, a government quarter and long roads between them; there is little to walk between and the airport is 25 km out. The trips that go wrong arrive at night without a booked car, try to walk between districts, or plan a same-day drive to the lake on a fuel-short day. Four small clusters cover a first visit by taxi; Lake Malawi is the trip that follows.

Cash: Withdraw at bank ATMs in Lilongwe before you head to the lake; keep MWK 50,000 in small notes for taxis and tips, and ask your lodge how it wants to be paid.
