Liechtenstein is small enough that the choice is less about distance than about what you want outside the window: town streets, mountain trails or a valley view. The table below gives the practical trade-offs.

Third, compare the cross-border option honestly. Sargans and Buchs in Switzerland and Feldkirch in Austria have more rooms and usually lower rates, and buses run from these towns to Vaduz. If your trip is one day of sightseeing, sleeping abroad and arriving on the first morning bus is often the better value. If you want dinner in Vaduz and a slow start, pay the Liechtenstein premium.

Fourth, book the type of property that fits. Vaduz and Schaan have business-style hotels and a few guesthouses; Triesenberg and the villages lean toward family-run guesthouses and apartments; Malbun has hotels and apartments aimed at skiers and hikers. Apartments suit stays of three nights or more, especially for families.

Finally, sort transport before you sort the room. If you arrive by train, your practical arrival points are Sargans, Buchs or Feldkirch, then a local bus into the country. Pick a hotel near a bus stop rather than near a trailhead you cannot reach without a car.

Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc, and cards are widely accepted in hotels, but small guesthouses and mountain huts may prefer cash. Check the cancellation terms on ski-season bookings in Malbun, where demand is concentrated in a short window.

Prices in Vaduz rise around the December Christmas market period, and Malbun fills on winter weekends and during school holidays. Outside those windows, same-week booking is usually workable. If you are arriving late from a train, confirm the check-in window in advance; small guesthouses do not all staff a desk at night.
