How much does a trip to Liechtenstein cost? Daily budget and prices

Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc and prices sit at Swiss levels, so the country is expensive by most visitors' standards. The table below is per person per day for travellers who sleep inside Liechtenstein; day-trippers pay only the food, transport and sights lines.

Two things move the number most: where you sleep and how often you eat in a restaurant. A hostel bed in Schaan plus supermarket food keeps a day near CHF 100. A 3★ hotel with two restaurant meals roughly doubles it. A 4★ hotel in Vaduz with wine tasting pushes past CHF 400.

A coffee is CHF 4.50–6, a plate of Käsknöpfle in a restaurant CHF 22–30, and a single bus ticket CHF 3–6. Museum entry at the Kunstmuseum in Vaduz runs CHF 15–18, and a day ski pass in Malbun CHF 45–55. All are 2026 estimates; confirm current prices and opening hours before you commit.

Supermarket food is the single biggest saving. Coop and Migros stores in Vaduz and Schaan sell bread, cheese, fruit and prepared salads at Swiss prices, which are still far below restaurant prices. A picnic lunch plus one restaurant dinner cuts a mid-range day by roughly CHF 30–40.

Most visitors treat Liechtenstein as a day trip from a Swiss or Austrian base, because the country has few beds and they are priced at Swiss levels. Sleeping in Feldkirch (Austria) is cheaper; Buchs and Sargans in Switzerland are convenient and mid-priced. From any of those, a local bus reaches Vaduz in well under an hour.

As a day-tripper you pay only food, transport and sights here: roughly CHF 50–90 for lunch, a coffee, buses and one museum. That is the cheapest way to see the country, and it is what the parent guide recommends for most travellers.

The currency is the Swiss franc (CHF). Cards are widely accepted, including at museums, hotels and larger restaurants, and euros are often taken with change given in francs. Carry a small amount of cash for small cafés and rural buses. Liechtenstein has no coins or notes of its own in circulation; only commemorative gold coins are minted for collectors.

Tipping follows Swiss practice: service is included, and rounding up or leaving about 5–10% is normal for good service. If you are on a tight budget, the biggest lever is accommodation — moving your base across the border can cut a day's cost by a third or more.

Book accommodation outside Liechtenstein. Feldkirch, Buchs and Sargans all have cheaper rooms and frequent connections to Vaduz. If you want to sleep in the country, hostels in Schaan are the lowest-cost option.

Eat one supermarket meal a day, use the bus instead of taxis, and pick one paid sight rather than several. Hiking is free and is the best-value activity in the country: the trails above Vaduz, Triesenberg and Malbun cost nothing beyond your bus fare. In winter, check whether a Malbun ski pass fits your budget before committing to a ski day.

Two days based in Feldkirch, sleeping there and visiting Vaduz and Triesenberg by bus: room about CHF 70–110 a night, food CHF 40–60 a day, buses CHF 10–15 a day, one museum CHF 15–18. Total roughly CHF 250–400 for two days, excluding travel to the region.

The same two days sleeping in a Vaduz 3★ hotel with restaurant meals: room CHF 90–130 a night, food CHF 70–100 a day, transport CHF 10–20 a day, sights CHF 20–40. Total roughly CHF 380–580. The gap is almost entirely accommodation and restaurant meals.
