Les Andelys

Go for one night, not a base: Château Gaillard plus the riverside walk fills a day; a second night only works with a car or a checked bus link to Giverny.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • France and Monaco ↗France has run temporary identity checks at its internal Schengen land borders since 2015; carry a passport or EU/EEA national ID on trains and buses from Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
  • France and Monaco ↗Nights in France and Monaco draw on the same Schengen 90-in-180-day allowance as the rest of the area; Monaco does not reset or pause it.
  • France ↗France is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • France ↗TGV (including the low-cost Ouigo) and Intercités night trains need a seat reservation: a rail pass alone does not let you board.
  • France ↗Paris, Lyon and other large cities run low-emission zones that require a Crit'Air sticker on cars; check before you drive a hire car or your own car into a city.
  • France ↗Carry your passport or national ID card: police can ask for identification, and hotels register foreign guests.

Les Andelys is a small Seine-side town in Normandy split into two halves: Grand-Andely (shops, the collegiate church) and Petit-Andely (the river, the ruined castle above it). Richard the Lionheart built Château Gaillard here in the 1190s; it is the reason most people stop. Trains do not reach the town, so you arrive by car or bus, and one night covers it.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town is walkable but the two halves, Grand-Andely and Petit-Andely, sit apart (about 2 km — check). No SNCF station in town: the nearest are Vernon and Gaillon-Aubevoye, both on the Paris–Rouen line, then a taxi or bus. Local buses are thin — check times before you rely on them.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: Check

Évreux

caution

Door to door: Check

Car via the N13/D316, about 30 km (check)

Cathedral and old centre; a half day, not a full one.

Rouenovernight

Door to door: Check

Car via the A13, about 65 km (check)

Old town, cathedral and museums need a full day; sleep there rather than return.

Château de Gaillon

caution

Door to door: Check

Car via the D313, about 15 km (check)

Renaissance gatehouse; opening days are limited, check before driving out.

Petit-Andely (riverside)

Closest to Château Gaillard, the Seine walk and the boat dock; the pick for one night.

Grand-Andely (town centre)

Shops, market and the collegiate church; about 2 km from the castle path.

Countryside B&Bs around the town

Quiet, car needed; good for two nights with a Giverny day.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are the steep, unrailed castle path, wet riverside stones and thin evening transport. Keep to lit streets at night and book your last leg back.
  • No train station in Les Andelys: plan the last leg from Vernon or Gaillon-Aubevoye in advance.
  • The climb to Château Gaillard is steep and uneven — check conditions and wear shoes with grip.
  • The castle is a ruin: check for open drops and missing railings before letting children roam.
  • Many restaurants close one or two days a week and shut the kitchen early: book or eat by 20:00.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for CDG and ORY: last-leg options from Vernon and Gaillon-Aubevoye, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Three walking clusters with rescue anchors: Petit-Andely riverside, the castle path, Grand-Andely centre.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Château Gaillard, both churches, the boat dock) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal and rain fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
