Layover in Hong Kong: what to do

Yes, if you are allowed to enter Hong Kong. Hong Kong runs its own immigration rules, separate from mainland China, so most US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Irish passport holders can enter visa-free for a short visit and leave the airport on a layover. You clear Hong Kong immigration, spend your hours in the city, then clear it again on the way back to the terminal.

The practical limit is time, not permission. Immigration, the Airport Express and the return trip to the gate eat roughly 2 to 2.5 hours of a layover. That leaves about 3.5 to 4 usable hours in a 6-hour window, 9 to 10 hours in a 12-hour window, and most of a day in a 24-hour window.

Stay inside the terminal if your onward flight boards in under 5 hours, if you hold a passport that needs a visa for Hong Kong, or if you are travelling on a separate ticket where a missed connection is your own cost.

Hong Kong is a separate immigration area from mainland China, so a Chinese visa does not cover it and a Hong Kong entry does not cover the mainland. If you plan to cross into Shenzhen or take a ferry to the mainland, you need a mainland China visa as well.

The table below is a starting point only. Rules change and depend on your passport, your ticket type and whether you leave the transit area. Confirm with the Hong Kong Immigration Department or your airline before you fly.

If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you can walk out with a day bag and skip storage entirely. That is the fastest option and the one to aim for.

If you are on separate tickets or your airline will not through-check, you have two choices. Left-luggage counters at the airport take bags by the item for a daily fee, which is simpler than carrying them into the city. Alternatively, many hotels and some shopping centres in Kowloon and on Hong Kong Island hold bags for a fee, but that adds a detour.

Do not leave bags unattended in the terminal. Security is active and unattended items are removed.

The Airport Express is the default. It runs from the airport to Tsing Yi, Kowloon and Hong Kong stations in about 24 minutes to Central, with trains every 10 minutes or so. A single is around HK$115 and a return around HK$205 (2026 estimate); a group of two or more can buy a discounted set.

The bus is cheaper and slower. Citybus and Long Win routes run to Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, taking 40 to 70 minutes depending on traffic, for roughly HK$20 to HK$40 (2026 estimate). The A21 to Tsim Sha Tsui is the usual pick for a Kowloon layover.

Taxis from the airport to the city cost roughly HK$300 to HK$400 plus tunnel and luggage charges (2026 estimate), and take 30 to 50 minutes. The metro (MTR) also connects via Tsing Yi if you want the cheapest rail option, but it requires a change and is slower than the Airport Express.

For the return leg, allow at least 2 hours before departure for an international flight: immigration, security and the walk to the gate all take time at Hong Kong International.

Six hours is a single stop. Take the Airport Express to Kowloon, walk the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, ride the Star Ferry across to Central and back if the queue is short, eat near the pier, and return. Do not attempt both sides of the harbour plus a market.

Twelve hours allows two or three stops. Add the Peak Tram and Victoria Peak for the view, or a dim sum lunch in Central, plus a walk through Mong Kok or the Temple Street night market if your layover runs into the evening. Keep one eye on the clock: the return trip plus immigration is a fixed 2 to 2.5 hours.

Twenty-four hours is a full day. Sleep in Kowloon or on Hong Kong Island rather than at the airport, then choose one half-day theme: markets and street food in Kowloon, or the Peak, Central and the Mid-Levels on the island. A day trip to Lantau or a Big Bus loop is possible but eats the buffer you need for the flight home.

Whatever the length, work backwards from your boarding time, not your departure time. Set an alarm for the moment you must leave the city.
