This is Zimbabwe's water region: the eastern end of Lake Kariba plus the Zambezi shoreline running east to the Mozambique border. It is not a walk-around destination. You come for houseboats, tiger fishing, Matusadona's shoreline elephants and Mana Pools' floodplain, and you move between them by boat, 4x4 or light aircraft. Kariba town is the only real service base; everything else is a lodge or a campsite with its own access rules.

- Distances on the map are misleading: Kariba to Mana Pools is a half-day drive on rough gravel, not a short hop.
- Crocodiles and hippos are the real hazard on the lake and the Zambezi. Do not swim, and do not walk the shoreline at dusk.
- Fuel and cash are reliable in Kariba town and scarce elsewhere; fill up and draw dollars before you leave town.
- Tsetse flies are present in parts of the Zambezi valley; dark clothing makes you a target.
