Lake Balaton is Central Europe's biggest lake, about 77 km long and shallow enough to wade out for hundreds of metres. The south shore is flat, sandy and free to swim; the north shore is volcanic hills, wine cellars and the Tihany peninsula, with paid beaches and deeper water. Trains run along both shores from Budapest, so you can base in one town and move by rail; a car is better for the north-shore hills and the Small-Balaton.

The lake is shallow, so summer storms build big waves fast. Warning beacons: 30 white/yellow flashes a minute means winds 40–60 km/h, get near shore; 60 red/white flashes means over 60 km/h, get out.
South-shore beaches are mostly free; many north-shore beaches charge an entrance fee and shelve quickly to about 14 m.
By mid-August Hungarian school holidays end and lakeside bars and restaurants start closing for the season.
July and August fill every bed; book before you arrive or you will spend the evening hunting rooms.

Lake Balaton: Water is warmest late July to mid-August; the lake is shallow, so yesterday's air temperature is a fair guide to today's water. Storms arrive fast in June–August.

Hungarian high season is mid-June to end of August, peaking around St Stephen's Day on 20 August. May, June and September are quieter and cheaper, with cool water.
