Lagos is Nigeria's largest city and business capital, spread over islands and mainland and joined by three bridges. Sights, hotels and nightlife cluster on Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki; the mainland holds the airport at Ikeja and most residents. Traffic decides your day, so pick a base and plan two things per day, not five.

Getting around

The BRT buses on dedicated lanes are the fast, cheap option (Cowry Card only, no cash). Danfo minibuses cover the same corridors for less but are confusing for a first visit. Ride-hailing apps are the default for door-to-door trips; agree the fare before entering an older taxi. The Blue Line rail runs Marina to Mile 2. Hiring a car with driver is the comfortable choice for a full day.

Watch out

Safety

Daytime movement in the island districts is generally fine; go out in groups at night and stick to known routes. The real risks are traffic, petty theft in markets and unmarked taxis: agree the fare first and use ride-hailing apps.
  • Traffic is the main cost of any plan: two island stops per day is realistic, not five.
  • Cash is not accepted on regulated BRT buses; buy and top up a Cowry Card at major terminals.
  • Avoid driving in BRT bus lanes and watch for one-way streets.
  • Do not leave the airport before your driver or pickup has made contact; you cannot re-enter after exiting.
  • Carry your yellow fever card: it is checked on arrival and before boarding.
  • Plan to reach the airport about 4 h before an evening international flight; the terminal is congested after 17:00.
  • Check your government's travel advice for Lagos State before booking.
