First time in Kyoto京都
Kyoto is a walking-cluster city, not temple bingo: one or two clusters a day, bags never on a city bus.
The honest verdict
Kyoto rewards early starts in one walking cluster at a time. It punishes cross-city zig-zags, 28-inch suitcases on buses, and plans that treat a 12:30 table as optional. Four walking clusters plus the covered downtown (the rain-day base) cover a first visit; everything else is a day-trip or a second trip.

Money and SIM
- Paying
- Cards, phone wallets and IC cards work in most shops, stations and chains; carry cash for temples, shrines, small restaurants, markets and goshuin stamps. Convenience-store ATMs take foreign cards.
- Cash
- Withdraw when projected cash < next 24h need + ¥5,000 (≈ US$35) reserve, at a convenience store on your route (≤4 min detour).
- SIM
- eSIM bought before you fly: Data only. A Japanese voice number needs a residence card, which tourists do not have.
Etiquette: the top three
- Temples and shrines
- Bow at the gate, keep to the side of the path, rinse your hands at the basin before the hall; hats off inside.
- Shoes
- Off wherever there is a step-up, a shoe rack or slippers; never on tatami in slippers. Carry clean socks.
- Queueing
- Line up at the painted marks on platforms and bus stops; board and pay as the bus signs say.
