KwaZulu-Natal packs two different trips into one province: the warm Indian Ocean coast (Durban, Umhlanga, the South and North Coasts) and the Zululand bush and wetlands (Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, iSimangaliso, Sodwana Bay). They are 2.5–4 hours apart by car on the N2. Most first-timers do Durban 2–3 nights, then drive north for 2–3 nights of safari and wetlands, and fly out of Durban's King Shaka airport. The Drakensberg and the Anglo-Zulu War battlefields are a separate inland trip — add them only if you have a week or more.

- The N2 between Piet Retief and Pongola is often badly potholed; the inland route via Ladysmith and Pietermaritzburg is slower but smoother.
- Long stretches of the N2 and N3 are toll roads; pay by card at the plaza but keep cash as a backup.
- Minibus taxis stop anywhere and are not a tourist transport option; use metered taxis or your rental car.

- Durban and the coast
- Subtropical and humid; sea is warm enough to swim most of the year. Summer (Dec–Feb) is hot and wet with afternoon storms; winter (Jun–Aug) is mild and dry.
- Zululand and the far north
- Best game viewing in the dry winter (May–Sep) when bush is thin; summer is green, hot and humid with malaria risk in the far north.
- Drakensberg and Midlands
- Cooler year-round; snow possible on high peaks Jun–Aug. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer — hike early.
The coast and the bush have different best months: winter (May–Sep) is prime for safari and dry hiking, while the coast is pleasant almost all year. Peak local holiday crowds hit Durban beaches in December and early January.
