- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
- Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
- Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
- Croatia ↗Croatia is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Croatian sources for your passport.
- Croatia ↗Book car ferries and popular catamarans ahead in summer; foot passengers still need to be early for the busiest routes.
- Croatia ↗Split and Dubrovnik fine visitors for walking shirtless or in swimwear away from beaches; carry a cover-up.
Kvarner is the bay and highlands between Istria and Dalmatia, with Rijeka as the transport hub and Krk, Cres, Rab and Lošinj as the island add-ons. It works as a 3–5 night stop between Istria and Dalmatia, or as a cheaper alternative to Split in July and August. If your trip is a first-time coastal run (Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik), Kvarner is a detour, not a substitute.

- Kvarner is not a beach-resort region in the Dalmatian sense: much of the coast is concrete platforms and pebble, and the water is cooler than in Dalmatia.
- The bura wind can shut the Krk Bridge to some vehicles and cancel ferries for a day; keep a buffer before a flight from Rijeka or Krk airport.
- Rijeka's port area is a working port; don't plan to swim there.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |

| Krk island | Rijeka | 60 min | unknown | Bus over the bridge; the last return is early evening — check. |
| Cres | Krk | 90 min | unknown | Car ferry; foot passengers walk on. Summer-only fast catamaran on some days. |
| Rab | Rijeka | 150 min | unknown | Catamaran or bus plus ferry; a long day, better as an overnight. |
| Plitvice Lakes | Rijeka | 180 min | unknown | Bus or car via the A6 and A1; a very long day trip — sleep nearby instead. |
| Crikvenica | Rijeka | 45 min | unknown | Local bus along the coast; beach and a promenade. |
| Senj | Rijeka | 90 min | unknown | Coastal road; the bura can make the drive unpleasant. |
Bags between cities
Left luggage at Rijeka bus station and the ferry terminal is limited; plan to carry bags or leave them at your hotel.

- Kvarner coast (Rijeka, Opatija, Crikvenica)
- July and August are hot and busy; the sea is warmest late July to early September. The bura blows coldest from December to March.
- Kvarner islands (Krk, Cres, Lošinj, Rab)
- Slightly milder and windier than the mainland; ferries run less often outside June–September.
- Highlands (Gorski kotar)
- Mountain weather: snow and closed forest roads in winter, cool nights even in summer.
Best months are May–June and September–early October: warm sea, fewer people, full ferry timetables. August is peak — book beds and car ferries weeks ahead.
