Kutacane

Skip Kutacane unless you need a cash stop or a bed before Ketambe: the town has one market and poor hotels. One night max, then move on.

Kutacane is the transport hub of Southeast Aceh, a market town of about 100,000 people on the main road through northern Sumatra. There is little to see beyond the daily market, and accommodation is basic. Most travellers use it as a stopover on the way to Ketambe or Takengon, or to get cash before heading into the jungle.

Watch out

Safety

Kutacane is generally safe, but the main road can be busy with trucks and scooters. The real risk is running out of cash: ATMs do not accept foreign cards.
  • ATMs do not accept foreign cards as of 2024: bring enough cash from Medan or Banda Aceh.
  • Hotels are very basic; stay only if you have to.
  • Buses to the north (Blankenjeren, Takengon) are infrequent; check departure times the day before.
