Kunene is Namibia's northwest: Kaokoland, the Kunene River and the Atlantic coast. It is the country's least developed region — no B-roads, one fuel station in the whole of Kaokoland (Opuwo), and D-roads that can need low range. Come for Epupa Falls, Himba communities around Opuwo and the Palmwag/Twyfelfontein belt; skip it if you have under a week or only a sedan and no time for the tarred approach.

Kaokoland has one fuel station (Opuwo). Carry water and a spare tyre.
Rainy season can cut whole areas off the road network; D-roads may need 4x4 and can have missing bridges.
Malaria risk across northern Namibia; cholera has been a concern near the Angolan border — check current advice.
Never drive after dark: livestock, sand and unmarked gravel edges.
