Komsomolsk-on-Amur is the third-largest city in the Russian Far East and a Baikal-Amur Mainline hub, about 8 h by bus or 11 h by train from Khabarovsk. It is an industrial city, not a sightseeing city: the draw is Soviet-era architecture, murals and the Amur riverfront, plus onward rail and river links. Most travellers give it one night, or skip it entirely.

- Winter is brutal: −20 °C to −30 °C from December to February. Pack accordingly or avoid.
- The river current is strong and industry sits upstream: locals swim, but the water is not clean.
- Some museums and the aircraft expocenter open by prearranged visit only: call or book through a local agency first.
- Hotel Voskhod asks for cash, in advance, daily; its lobby ATM can swallow a card if you pause too long.

A working industrial city with ordinary street crime levels for Russia; the real risks are winter cold, the strong Amur current and unlit outskirts after dark. Keep to the centre at night.
