Ernakulam, Kochi: neighborhood guide

Ernakulam is the mainland half of Kochi and the city's working centre. It splits into three rough zones: the central business district around Mahatma Gandhi Road, Marine Drive and Chittoor Road; the downtown belt of offices and upscale housing along SA Road and around Vyttila Junction; and the suburbs, which hold much of the newer commercial building.

This is where Kochi does its business. You get banks, hospitals, malls, showrooms, the big rail stations and the metro, plus a long waterfront promenade at Marine Drive. What you do not get is the Portuguese-Dutch-British heritage that draws most visitors — that sits across the water in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.

The feel is Indian city ordinary rather than tourist-facing: commuter crowds, rush-hour traffic, and a lot of good, cheap food aimed at office workers and families rather than visitors.

Stay in Ernakulam if transport is your priority. Both main rail stations are here, the metro starts in the city, and the airport road is easier from this side. If you arrive late by train or fly out early, a night here saves a long cross-town transfer.

Stay here too if you want a wider choice of hotels at lower prices, or if you are in Kochi for work, hospitals or shopping. Marine Drive is a pleasant place for an evening walk, and the ferry to Old Kochi is a cheap, quick link.

Skip Ernakulam if the point of your trip is the heritage quarter. Old Kochi has the lanes, the Chinese fishing nets, the churches and the cafés, and it is walkable. Staying in Ernakulam means a ferry or a 30–45 minute road trip each way to see it, which eats into short stays.

Ernakulam eats Kerala food at city prices. Look for breakfast places serving appam with stew, puttu with kadala curry, and idli or dosa with sambar and coconut chutney. Lunch is often a Kerala sadya-style thali or a fish curry rice plate, served fast and cheap around office districts.

For seafood, the Kochi style is fish curry with coconut and kudampuli (a sour fruit used instead of tamarind), plus fried fish and prawns. Toddy shops on the outskirts serve strong, spicy Kerala food with coconut toddy; they are a local institution rather than a tourist stop.

Around MG Road, Marine Drive and the Broadway shopping area you will find vegetarian restaurants, biryani and fried chicken chains, bakeries and juice stalls. Malayali Muslim food — pathiri, biryani, fried fish — is easy to find too. Most places are inexpensive; a full meal at a local restaurant is a few hundred rupees (2026 estimate).

Ernakulam has two main rail stations: Ernakulam Junction, usually called South, and Ernakulam Town, called North. Long-distance trains to and from most of India stop at one or both, so check which station your ticket names before booking a hotel.

Cochin International Airport is at Nedumbassery, roughly 25–30 km northeast of the centre, with road access via Aluva. Allow an hour or more in traffic (check). The metro links parts of Ernakulam with Aluva and Tripunithura, which helps for the northern side of the city (check).

To reach Old Kochi, the ferry from the Main Boat Jetty is the quickest and cheapest option in daylight and a trip in itself; by road you cross the bridges via Thevara or the northern route, which can take 30–45 minutes in traffic (check). Autos are metered in theory but often negotiated; agree the fare first, or use a ride-hailing app. Short walks are possible but pavements are patchy and crossing busy roads needs care.
