Best time to visit Kiribati: weather and seasons by month

Kiribati lies on the equator, so temperatures barely move through the year: expect hot, humid days and warm nights in every month. What changes is rain, wind and how many people are travelling. The table below gives the site's verdict for each month, plus the crowd and price level you should plan around.

The Gilbert Islands — Tarawa, Abaiang, Butaritari, Abemama — are hot all year, with rain mostly from December to March in normal years. April is the transition: showers ease, the trade winds settle in, and the lagoon flattens out. May to November is the reliable window, with June to October the driest and calmest stretch.

The Line Islands are different. Kiritimati (Christmas Island) is unusually dry for an equatorial atoll, with trade winds blowing most of the year. Its wetter months run roughly March to April, and the rest of the year is workable, which is why fishing there runs all year rather than in a short season.

Two climate patterns override the normal calendar. In El Niño years the Gilberts get heavy rain; in La Niña years the southern Gilberts can face severe drought. Kiribati sits outside the cyclone belt, so the weather risks to plan for are drought, king tides and swell rather than storms.

Kiribati has little mass tourism, so crowds are relative: the constraint is flights, not beaches. Mid-July is the one period when demand spikes, because Gospel Day and Independence Day (12 July) bring several days of celebrations, sports and dancing, offices close, and inter-island seats fill early. Book flights and rooms months ahead if you want that week.

Christmas and New Year are the other pressure point. In December, people travel home to the outer islands, services slow, and flights fill. Easter (late March to April) brings church events and closures, and public holidays such as International Women's Day (8 March), National Health Day (mid-April, check the date), Youth Day (early August, check the date) and Human Rights and Peace Day (10 December) close offices but rarely disrupt a trip.

For the lowest prices and quietest travel, aim at February–March or late August–November. Prices stay at a medium level most of the year; the main saving is on flights, which are limited and rarely discounted.

The two main groups are thousands of kilometres apart and not linked by practical flights, so pick one and match it to the season. South Tarawa and the Gilbert outer atolls are best April to November, when the rain eases and the trade winds keep things comfortable. Kiritimati works all year, with September and October the standout months for fishing and seabird watching.

If your trip is built around a single activity, let that decide the month: fly-fishing and birds on Kiritimati, culture and the Betio battlefield on Tarawa. If you are flexible, April to June and September to November give you dry weather without the July rush.

Pack for heat, sun and rain in any month: light clothing, a hat, high-factor sunscreen, insect repellent and a light rain shell. Reef shoes help on the coral flats, and a refillable bottle is useful because drinking water is bottled or filtered on the islands.

Plan around the flight schedule rather than the weather. Inter-island services are few, so build in a buffer day before any international departure. Check current entry rules before booking, and confirm that your chosen island has guesthouse space for your dates, since capacity is small.
