Give Kichijoji one day, not a hotel base: Inokashira Park plus Harmonica Yokochō, 15 min from Shinjuku on the Chūō Line.
Kichijoji is a western Tokyo suburb on the JR Chūō and Sōbu lines and the terminus of the Keio Inokashira line. Its draw is Inokashira Park — cherry and maple trees around a lake — plus dense shopping streets, live houses and yakitori alleys. It works as a half or full day from central Tokyo, or as a quieter base for the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka.
