Kololo is the diplomatic quarter: wide streets, embassies, and the densest cluster of mid-range and upmarket hotels and restaurants. You can walk to dinner in the evening, which is rare in Kampala. It suits a first visit of two or three nights, and it is the easiest base for a driver to collect you for a safari departure.
Nakasero sits closer to the centre and the taxi parks, with business hotels and a few older colonial-era buildings. It is the practical choice for one or two nights, for meetings in the CBD, and for anyone arriving by bus. Expect more noise and less green space than Kololo.
Bugolobi and Ntinda are residential and increasingly where serviced apartments sit. They are good value for four nights or more, with supermarkets and cafés nearby, but you will use ride-hailing for every sight. Muyenga, on the southern hills, has guesthouses with views and space for families; the roads are steep and you need a car.
Entebbe is a separate town 40 km south, on Lake Victoria, and it is where most travellers spend their first or last night in Uganda. It is quiet, has the botanical gardens and the lake, and puts you 10–15 minutes from the airport. If you stay in Entebbe you are not in Kampala: budget 1–2 hours each way by road, or a short domestic flight if one fits your dates.
For hostels and budget guesthouses, most sit in or near the centre and Kololo, with dorm beds around UGX 60,000–120,000 (US$16–32) in 2026. Check whether the price includes breakfast, airport pickup and reliable backup power before you book.

Tips
Book the first night before you land. Arriving at Entebbe at night and hunting for a room is the most common way to lose a day. If you land late, sleep in Entebbe and move to Kampala the next morning.
Traffic decides your day, so choose the area closest to what you are doing, not the cheapest room. If your itinerary runs through the centre and the museum, Nakasero or Kololo saves an hour a day. If you are heading west to Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi, a hotel on the western edge or in Entebbe can cut the first morning's drive.
Pay in shillings where you can, keep small notes for tips, and carry a copy of your passport for check-in. Most hotels accept cards, but small guesthouses may not.
