Juan Griego
Half a day to a full day: watch the sunset from Fortín de la Galera, walk the bay and browse the duty-free shops. Not a base — sleep in Porlamar or Pampatar.
Juan Griego is a small coastal town on the north shore of Margarita Island, known for its 17th-century fort, wide bay and sunset views. Most visitors come for a few hours or one night. The town has a handful of beaches, a small museum and a strip of shops selling imported goods at lower prices thanks to the free-port status. It works best as a half-day stop on a Margarita Island road trip.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Scams and watch-outs
- US dollars cash widely accepted; bolívares (VES) for small purchases. Check the exchange rate before you arrive.
- Fortín de la Galera may have no fixed opening hours; ask locally or go in the late afternoon for sunset.
- Beaches have no lifeguards; check conditions before swimming.
- Petty theft can occur on crowded streets; keep valuables out of sight.
Juan Griego is generally safe for daytime visits, but petty theft and unreliable emergency services are real risks. Carry only what you need, avoid isolated beaches after dark and keep your passport in a hotel safe. Read your government travel advice before booking.
