Where to stay in Jordan: best areas and types of hotel

Base in Amman for the first two or three nights, in Jabali Amman if you want to walk to the Citadel, Roman Theatre and downtown food, or in Abdoun and Sweifieh if you want quiet streets and taxis everywhere. Then move south: one or two nights in Wadi Musa for Petra, one or two in a Wadi Rum camp, and a night at the Dead Sea or in Aqaba if your route allows.

Do not try to see Petra from an Amman hotel. The drive is roughly three hours each way, and the site needs a full day at minimum. Sleeping in Wadi Musa also gets you to the gate before the tour buses.

Amman splits into two useful zones. Jabali Amman, the hill around the Citadel and the Roman Theatre, puts you within walking distance of the main sights and the busy downtown restaurants; streets are steep and traffic is heavy, so pick a place with a lift if you have luggage. Abdoun, Sweifieh and the 3rd Circle are calmer, with malls, cafés and international hotels, and you will take a taxi or ride-hailing car for almost everything. Rainbow Street suits evening food and people-watching.

Wadi Musa is the town at the gate of Petra. Hotels on the upper side near the visitor centre cut your morning walk; the lower town is cheaper and has more restaurants. A handful of places sit right by the gate and cost more for the location. Wherever you sleep, check whether the Petra ticket is included in your rate — most hotels do not include it.

Wadi Rum has two kinds of camp: the older, simpler camps near the village and the visitor centre, and the bubble and luxury camps deeper in the protected area. Deeper camps mean a longer 4x4 transfer but a quieter night. Confirm what the price covers: dinner, breakfast, the jeep tour, water and the protected-area entry are often separate line items.

The Dead Sea strip is a line of resort hotels on the eastern shore, about an hour from Amman and handy before a flight. Aqaba is the Red Sea base, with beach hotels, dive shops and the winter sun that the rest of the country lacks in January. Madaba and the airport road suit a last night before an early departure.

Hostels and simple guesthouses in Amman start around 20–35 JOD (US$28–50) for a dorm bed or a basic double, and Wadi Musa has a good supply of cheap family-run hotels. Mid-range three- and four-star hotels run about 50–90 JOD (US$70–127) in Amman and Wadi Musa, with breakfast. International five-star hotels in Amman, the Dead Sea and Aqaba are 120 JOD and up, and often cheaper booked directly or outside peak weekends.

Desert camps are priced per person, not per room, and usually include dinner and breakfast: simple camps from about 40 JOD, bubble and luxury camps from about 90–120 JOD. Petra-area guesthouses and eco-lodges around Dana sit in the mid-range. Prices rise sharply for Eid holidays, Christmas, New Year and the spring and autumn high seasons; the same room can double.

Two practical notes. Many Jordanian hotels quote in JOD but accept US dollars, and the dinar is pegged to the dollar at about US$1.41, so the conversion is stable. Service charges of 10% are often already on the bill, so check before adding a tip — see jordan currency and tipping.

Book Petra hotels and Wadi Rum camps two to three months ahead for March to May and September to November, the two comfortable seasons, and earlier for Eid, Christmas and New Year. Wadi Rum has a limited number of tents and the popular camps sell out first. Amman has a deep supply of rooms and can usually be booked a few days ahead, though prices climb on Thursday and Friday nights when Jordanian families travel.

Winter is the bargain season outside Aqaba and the Dead Sea: Petra can be cold, wet and occasionally snowy, and some desert camps close or run reduced services. Summer is hot everywhere except Aqaba and the highlands, and Dead Sea rates drop. If your dates are fixed by a flight, book the Petra and Wadi Rum nights first and build the rest of the route around them.

Jordan uses types C, D, F, G and J plugs at 230 V, so a universal adapter covers most devices. The country runs on UTC+3 all year with no daylight saving, and the weekend is Friday and Saturday. Emergency number is 911.

Ride-hailing apps work in Amman and Aqaba and are usually cheaper and easier than negotiating a taxi; in Wadi Musa and Wadi Rum you depend on your hotel or camp for transfers.
