Best day trips from Johannesburg: how to get there and what to see

Pick by how far you are willing to travel and whether you have a car. Pretoria and Soweto are the low-effort options; the Cradle and Pilanesberg need a full day and, in practice, a vehicle or a booked tour.

Pretoria is the simplest day out. The Gautrain runs from Sandton, Marlboro, Rosebank and Park Station to Hatfield and Pretoria, and the trip takes under an hour. From the stations you still need a taxi or e-hailing car to the Union Buildings, the Voortrekker Monument or Freedom Park. In October the jacarandas along the streets turn the city purple, which is the one month worth planning around.

Soweto is often sold as a day trip but it sits inside Johannesburg, so treat it as a half day. A guide is worth the money here: the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Vilakazi Street and the Orlando Towers are easy to reach, but context is what makes them land. Combine it with the Apartheid Museum on the same day if you have the energy.

The Cradle of Humankind, west of the city, holds the Sterkfontein caves and the Maropeng visitor centre, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tours leave Johannesburg in the morning and return by late afternoon. Bring a light jacket; the caves stay cool.

Pilanesberg is the realistic safari day trip: a malaria-free park in an old volcanic crater, about 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Operators run early pickups, a game drive and a late return, which makes for a long day. If you want more time with animals, sleep over rather than day-tripping.

The Magaliesberg and Hartbeespoort Dam area suits self-drivers: a cableway, viewpoints and lunch spots about 90 minutes out. Lesedi Cultural Village, closer in, is a staged but well-run introduction to several cultures if you have no time to travel further.

Guided day tours from Johannesburg generally run R1,200–2,500 per person depending on distance, park fees and whether lunch is included (2026 estimate). Self-driving is cheaper per person but adds car hire, fuel and tolls. Gautrain fares to Pretoria are modest; check the current fare before you go.

Distances look short on a map but traffic on the N1, N3 and M1 can double your time. Leave early, and plan to be back before dark.

South Africa drives on the left. If you are not used to it, a booked tour removes the stress and the navigation.

Crime is a real concern in and around Johannesburg. Stick to known routes, avoid isolated stops after dark, and use e-hailing or a hotel-arranged driver rather than walking to a minibus rank at night.

Cash is still useful for small vendors and tips, but cards work almost everywhere a tourist goes. Carry a little cash, not a lot.
