Where to stay in Johannesburg: best neighborhoods and hotels

Johannesburg is a spread-out city where the neighborhood decides your trip more than the hotel does. Rosebank and Sandton sit on the Gautrain line, have the densest restaurant and hotel supply, and are the easiest places to walk to dinner. Braamfontein and Maboneng give you galleries, coffee and markets but need a car or an e-hailing app after dark. Soweto is worth a night if you want Vilakazi Street in the morning before the tour buses. If you are only connecting through OR Tambo, sleep in Kempton Park.

Distances are real: Rosebank to Sandton is about 10 km, Rosebank to Soweto about 25 km, and the airport to Sandton about 30 km. Budget 20–45 minutes by car in traffic.

Rosebank is the safest default for a first visit. The Gautrain station, the mall, the Sunday rooftop market and a dense strip of restaurants sit within a few blocks, so you can eat well without booking a car. Hotels range from business chains to boutique guesthouses.

Sandton is the business and shopping core: bigger hotels, the convention centre, Nelson Mandela Square and more evening options, at higher prices. It is about 10 km north of Rosebank and roughly 30 km from OR Tambo, with the Gautrain covering both legs.

Both areas are quiet at night on the residential edges. Ask the hotel which streets to use after dark rather than cutting through empty blocks.

Braamfontein, next to Wits University, is the city's student and gallery quarter: the Neighbourgoods Market on Saturdays, small music venues and coffee roasters. Maboneng, east of the CBD, is a compact redeveloped block of apartments, bars and the Sunday market on Fox Street.

These areas suit repeat visitors and younger travellers who want a downtown base and are comfortable using e-hailing apps for every evening trip. Walk during the day inside the precincts; take a car between them and back to your door at night. Parking is limited, so a rental car is more hassle than help here.

Soweto is a city of its own, about 25 km southwest of Rosebank. Staying overnight in a Vilakazi Street guesthouse or a homestay puts you at the Apartheid-era landmarks before the day tours arrive and lets you eat at local shisa nyama spots in the evening.

Most first-timers visit on a guided half-day tour from Rosebank or Sandton instead, which is simpler if you have only one or two nights. If you do stay, arrange a transfer or drive yourself and ask your host which routes to use after dark.

For a single night between flights, stay in Kempton Park or Boksburg near OR Tambo. Hotels there run shuttles, and you avoid a 30–45 minute drive into the city in traffic. There is nothing to walk to, which is fine for a stopover and wrong for a holiday.

Budget travellers get the best value in Melville and Westdene, west of the centre, where guesthouses and cafés cluster, and in the hostels around Braamfontein and Maboneng. Dorm beds are cheap; private rooms in the same buildings cost more than a mid-range hotel outside the trendy zones.
