The Jerusalem Hills are a mountainous region west of Jerusalem, in the Judean Mountains, with an average elevation of about 650 m. Route 1 connects Jerusalem with Tel Aviv and crosses the region. The hills and valleys run east–west, making north–south journeys longer than they look; roads away from Route 1 are narrow and winding. Jerusalem is the practical base for most visitors. Abu Ghosh is a stop along Route 1; choose it as an overnight base only after checking accommodation and transport options. A car offers more flexibility, while buses serve the region from Jerusalem but are less frequent away from Route 1.
