The Negev is the southern half of Israel — rocky desert, dry riverbeds and three erosion craters, not sand dunes. It is a driving region: sights sit 20–90 minutes apart on Route 40 and Route 90, and buses reach the towns but not the trailheads. Sleep in Be'er Sheva for rail and bus links, in Mitzpe Ramon for the Ramon Crater, or push to Eilat for the Red Sea. Two nights covers the central Negev; add Eilat only if you want sea and diving.

Northern Negev (Be'er Sheva): Mild winters with occasional rain; July–August afternoons are hot and dry.
Central Negev highlands (Mitzpe Ramon): About 900 m up, so nights are cold from December to February; spring brings the desert bloom.
Arava and Eilat: Warm enough to swim in winter; July–August is too hot for desert hiking.

March–May and October–November are the hiking windows. Flash floods can close roads in the Arava after winter rain.
