The Jemez are a volcanic range about 90 minutes north of Albuquerque, reached only by car. Almost everything worth seeing sits on or near New Mexico SR 4, the road that crosses the Valles Caldera between Los Alamos and San Ysidro. Sleep in Los Alamos for services and Bandelier access, or in Jemez Springs for hot springs and a shorter run to the west side. Two nights is enough for the caldera, one good hike and a soak; three if you add Bandelier properly.

- SR 126 from Cuba to La Cueva is unpaved for long stretches and can be impassable after winter storms; the long way via San Ysidro is the safe winter route.
