Getting there
Metro M2 to Taksim for the top end. For the bottom end, the Tünel funicular runs up from Karaköy, or the F2 Kabataş–Taksim funicular links the tram at Kabataş with Taksim. The historic tram runs along the avenue when in service (check).

Car-free. Closed to general traffic; only the historic tram, service and police vehicles use it. The tram line is sometimes suspended for works, and Taksim Square is sometimes closed off by police on protest-prone dates such as 1 May (check).

Scams and traps
- Friendly stranger invites you for a drink at a bar he knows; the bill runs to thousands of lira and staff pressure you to pay. Choose your own bar and ask for prices first.
- A shoe-shiner drops his brush in front of you, you hand it back, and he 'thanks' you with a shine he then charges for. Keep walking.
- Street sellers of mussels or chestnuts who do not state a price: ask before they hand you anything.
Accessibility
- The avenue is wide and car-free but slopes down from Taksim to Tünel; start at Taksim to walk mostly downhill.
- Paving is uneven in places and the crowds are heavy at weekends.
- Many passages and side-street restaurants have steps; the Tünel funicular has steps at its stations (check step-free access).

A line of history
Under the Ottomans this was the Grande Rue de Péra, the main street of the European quarter of Pera. It was renamed İstiklal (Independence) after the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923.
