The coastal plain is Israel's flat, built-up Mediterranean strip: Tel Aviv and its suburbs, the Sharon towns north (Netanya, Herzliya, Hadera), and the southern cities (Ashdod, Ashkelon). Trains run the length of it, so one base covers most of it. Sleep in Tel Aviv for food, beaches and nightlife; use Netanya or Herzliya only if you want cheaper rooms or a quieter beach. The archaeological and nature stops sit between the cities and need a car or a bus plus a walk.
