Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk and a working port town, not a resort. The compact, pedestrianised centre holds a 1548 mansion in a 70-acre park, one of the largest groups of medieval churches in England, and a regenerated waterfront of bars and apartments. Most travellers see it in a day; it earns a night or two only as a base for Constable Country, Woodbridge and the coast.

Get around
The centre is compact and pedestrianised, so walking beats everything. Ipswich Buses and First Eastern Counties run urban routes from Tower Ramparts; flat fare £1.80 on Ipswich Buses, day passes available. The free town-centre loop bus (#38) is useful for orientation.
