Sajama is Bolivia's oldest national park (1939) and the one that rewards walkers rather than 4WD convoys. The village sits at 4,240 m under Nevado Sajama, Bolivia's highest peak at 6,542 m. Trails run from the village straight onto open plain and up to 5,000–5,680 m without a guide; the big volcanoes need a guide and equipment. There is no mass tourism here, no ticket gate on the trails, and nights below 0°C for most of the year.

Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Visiting lightly
- Pack out rubbish, including other people's, so the park stays free and guide-free.
- Use established campsites and keep fires off the plain.
- Hire local guides in the village for the volcano climbs so the money stays in Sajama.
