Indonesia in October: what to expect

October is the last full month of the dry season across Bali, Java and Nusa Tenggara. Days are warm and humid on the coasts, with sun through the morning and a build-up of cloud in the afternoon. Rain usually arrives as short, heavy showers rather than all-day drizzle, and the second half of the month is wetter than the first.

The pattern flips by region. Raja Ampat and parts of Maluku are heading into their dry window, which runs roughly October to April, while Sumatra stays wet in most places and can carry smoke haze from land-clearing fires between August and October.

In the mountains it is a different trip. Bromo and Ijen sit above 2,000 m and nights drop to around 5 °C, so a fleece and a windproof layer matter more than beach clothes.

October sits in the shoulder between the July–August peak and the November–December build-up. Beds in Ubud, Canggu and the Gili islands are easier to find than in August, and villa and hotel rates are usually lower, though not as low as November.

Flights follow the same curve: international seats into Denpasar and Jakarta are cheaper than in July or December, and domestic hops to Labuan Bajo or Yogyakarta are still bookable a few weeks out. Book Komodo and Raja Ampat liveaboard trips earlier — those sell on season, not on price.

The main exception is the last week of the month, when early Christmas travellers start arriving and the first storms push some beach plans indoors.

October is a quiet month on the national calendar. There is no fixed public holiday in the month, and the big Balinese ceremonies — Galungan and Kuningan — fall in June and December in 2026.

Village temple anniversaries (odalan) happen somewhere on Bali almost every week and are usually open to respectful visitors in a sarong and sash. In Java, check local listings for Yogyakarta arts events and the start of the university term, which fills the city with students.

Because dates move with the lunar and Balinese calendars, confirm anything you plan to travel for before booking.

Bali is the easy pick: dry-season weather, working surf on the Bukit and around Canggu, and Ubud still green from the tail of the rains. It is a good month for a first trip because you can combine culture and beach without moving far.

Java rewards the same window. Yogyakarta for Borobudur and Prambanan, then east to Bromo and Ijen for clear dawn views before the wet season clouds return. Nusa Tenggara — Lombok, Flores and Komodo — is still in its dry window, with diving and the Komodo dragons both on the table.

If you want the opposite season, head east: Raja Ampat and parts of Maluku open their best months now, with calm seas and good visibility.

Pack for heat and humidity with a rain shell for the late-month showers: light cotton or technical shirts, quick-dry shorts, sandals, and one long-sleeved layer for temples and air-conditioned buses.

Add a fleece, a windproof jacket and closed shoes if Bromo or Ijen is on the itinerary — dawn there is genuinely cold. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a refillable bottle, and a sarong or sash for Balinese temples.

For the wetter second half, a dry bag for phones and a small umbrella earn their space.

September is drier and slightly busier; November turns wet and quiet, with rough seas to the Gilis and Komodo. December brings the rain and the Christmas crowds together, which is the worst combination for value.

If your dates are flexible, late September to mid-October is the sweet spot: dry enough for beaches and volcanoes, before the holiday pricing starts.
