Useful apps for India: transport, maps, translation
Install four apps before you land: a ride-hailing app (Uber, Ola or Rapido), IRCTC Rail Connect for trains, Google Maps with offline areas downloaded, and a translation app. Add WhatsApp, since hotels, drivers and guides use it for everything. An Indian SIM or eSIM makes all of them work properly; without one, public Wi-Fi needs an Indian number for the OTP.

A local SIM or eSIM is the single thing that makes the rest work: Jio, Airtel and Vi sell tourist SIMs at airport counters and their shops, and you need your passport, visa and a photo. Activation can take a few hours, so buy on arrival rather than the night before a train.
For getting around, keep one ride-hailing app and one backup. Uber, Ola and Rapido all cover the big cities; in smaller towns, availability thins out and you fall back on autos and local taxis. For trains, IRCTC Rail Connect is the official booking app and the one that matters most, because Indian Railways seats sell out early on popular routes. Pair it with a train-status app to check delays on the day.
Google Maps is reliable for city navigation and driving directions on highways, but treat it as a guide rather than gospel on hill roads and in rural areas. Download offline maps for the regions you will visit. For language, a translation app with offline Hindi plus the regional language of your route covers menus, signs and short conversations; most people you deal with in hotels and transport speak some English.

Tips
WhatsApp is the default channel for anything arranged in advance: hotels, drivers, guides and shops. If you are booking a driver or a guide, expect the conversation to move there.
Payments are the other app layer. UPI QR codes are accepted almost everywhere, but a foreign card usually cannot be linked to a normal UPI app, so plan to pay in cash or by card and treat UPI as a local habit rather than your own tool. Carry rupees in small notes as a fallback.
