Idaho is one state made of two different trips: the forested northern panhandle around Coeur d'Alene, and the high-desert south around Boise, with the Snake River Plain and Eastern Idaho's potato country in between. There is no useful intrastate rail or bus network, so pick one base and drive. Boise is the largest metro in the US Rockies outside Colorado and the only airport with wide connections; Spokane (GEG) serves the panhandle. Give the state 4–7 nights if you drive, 2–3 if you only want one base.
