Install four apps before you land: BudapestGO for Budapest public transport, MÁV for national trains and buses, Bolt for ride-hailing and taxis, and Google Maps for walking and transit. Add a translation app and your bank's app for card approvals. If you only ride trains between cities, MÁV plus Google Maps is enough.

Set up your phone before you fly. Download BudapestGO, MÁV, Bolt and Google Maps, sign in, and add a card so you are not doing it on airport Wi-Fi. If you use an eSIM, install it at home and test it before departure.

BudapestGO is the Budapest transport app: metro, tram, bus, trolleybus, HÉV suburban rail and the airport bus. You can buy single tickets, day and multi-day passes, and validate them in the app. Paper tickets from machines still work, but the app removes the queue and the risk of forgetting to validate.

MÁV is the national rail operator's app, and it also covers Volánbusz regional buses. Use it for intercity tickets, seat reservations and timetables. For international routes, check the same app or buy at the station; cross-border booking is not always available online.

Bolt is the main ride-hailing app in Hungary. It works in Budapest and in several larger cities, with fixed prices shown before you book, which avoids taxi meter disputes. Uber does not operate in Hungary. If you hail a taxi on the street, agree the fare or insist on the meter.

Google Maps handles walking, driving and most city transit well. Rural bus and train times can be incomplete, so cross-check with the MÁV app. For hiking and cycling, an offline map app is worth adding.

For translation, Google Translate or DeepL with offline Hungarian downloaded helps in shops, pharmacies and rural areas. Hungarian is not related to neighbouring languages, so English is the practical fallback; it is widely spoken in Budapest tourism but thinner outside it.

Tips

Download offline maps for the areas you plan to visit, especially Lake Balaton and the Danube Bend, where signal can drop.

Keep a small amount of forint cash for rural buses, markets and small shops; cards are widely accepted in cities but not everywhere.

If your bank blocks foreign transactions, approve them in your banking app before you pay, or carry a backup card.

Screenshot your tickets and reservations; not every conductor or driver accepts a phone screen in low signal.

Check the MÁV app for engineering works, which can replace trains with buses on some routes.
