Humboldt County is redwood country on the North Coast of California: 2.3 million acres, about 80 percent forest, with the tallest trees reached by car rather than on foot from town. There are only three roads in — Highway 101 along the coast, Highway 299 east to Interstate 5, and Highway 36 from Red Bluff — so a car decides what you see. Sleep in Arcata or Eureka for food, breweries and Humboldt Bay, then drive south to Humboldt Redwoods and the Avenue of the Giants, or north to Redwood National and State Parks. Coastal towns run cool and foggy; a few miles inland it can be sunny and warm on the same afternoon.
