Rules in force · 6Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) giv…
- Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
- Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
- Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
- Honduras ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Honduras's migration authority or a Honduran consulate; the CA-4 agreement with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua can make your permitted stay count across all four.
- Honduras ↗Transit San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa by day and with pre-arranged transport; do not use public buses between cities.
- Honduras ↗Do not travel to Gracias a Dios (La Mosquitia) except with a specialist operator; several governments advise against all travel there.
The highlands run along Honduras's central spine, from the Guatemalan border to the Nicaraguan side. Two clusters matter for a trip: the western colonial-and-Maya corner (Copán Ruinas, Santa Rosa de Copán, Gracias, La Entrada) and the centre (Lake Yojoa, Comayagua, Tegucigalpa). Distances are short on the map and long on the road — mountain two-lane highways, livestock, and slow buses. Pick one or two bases and day-trip; changing hotels every night burns the daylight you came for.

- Copán Ruinas 3 + Lake Yojoa 2 + Gracias 2 + Comayagua 1
- Copán Ruinas + Gracias + Lake Yojoa + Tegucigalpa in four days is mostly bus time.
- Highland roads flood and slide in the rainy season; a washed-out bridge can add hours.
- Tegucigalpa's Toncontín approach is short and steep — some travellers prefer to fly into San Pedro Sula and start west.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copán Ruinas | La Entrada | 90 min | unknown | Buses run through the day; the last return is early evening — check locally. |
| Gracias | Santa Rosa de Copán | 90 min | unknown | Mountain road; go in the morning and stay the night rather than doubling back. |
| Lake Yojoa | San Pedro Sula | 120 min | unknown | CA-5 roadside stop; easy to combine with a Comayagua leg. |
| Comayagua | Tegucigalpa | 90 min | unknown | Frequent buses on the CA-5; the colonial core is walkable from the centre. |
Bags between cities
No luggage-forwarding habit here; travel with your bag or leave it at the hotel between short hops.

- Western highlands (Copán, Gracias, Santa Rosa)
- Dry, cool mornings Nov–Apr; afternoon showers May–Oct. Evenings need a layer year-round.
- Central highlands (Tegucigalpa, Comayagua, Lake Yojoa)
- Warmer and drier than the west; Tegucigalpa hits the low 30s °C in the dry season.
The highlands are the cool escape from the coasts. Rainy season runs roughly May to October, heaviest September–October; the dry months are also the clearest for ruins and viewpoints.
