Homosassa Springs
Give Homosassa Springs one full day for the manatee park and one afternoon on the river; sleep 1–2 nights in Old Homosassa, not on US-19.
Homosassa Springs is a small Gulf-coast town on US-19, about 75 miles north of Tampa, built around one thing: the spring where West Indian manatees winter and can be seen year-round from an underwater observatory. The state park is the anchor; the rest of the day is river, boats and seafood in Old Homosassa. Two nights is plenty, and a car is close to essential.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: US-19 is the spine, FL-44 crosses east–west north of town, and West Halls River Road and Yulee Drive reach the two halves of Homosassa. No useful local bus. Distances are short — the park entrance to Old Homosassa is about 10 min by car — so taxis and rideshare exist but are thin; book a return ride if you drink on the river.

Old Homosassa (Halls River Road / Cherokee Way)
Riverfront motels, vacation homes and docks; walk to Crumps' Landing and the marina. Best for a river weekend.
US-19 / Suncoast Blvd strip
Chain motels and the park's main entrance; car-first, cheaper, no walkable dining.
Crystal River
15–20 min south; more beds, more restaurants, the other manatee base. Use it if Homosassa is full.

Watch out
Safety
- Manatee season peaks in cold snaps (Dec–Feb): go early, the park fills and ticket counters close at 4 PM.
- Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms: start outdoor plans before noon and carry water.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; check forecasts and evacuation zones before a late-summer stay.
- Scallop season is short and boat ramps fill early — reserve a boat or charter ahead.
- Rideshare coverage is limited outside Crystal River; don't count on a late-night pickup.
