Hokkaido is Japan's northern island and a prefecture in one, about the size of Scotland with 5.3 million people. It has no thousand-year temples; what it has is national parks, powder snow, seafood and dairy, and long distances between them. Trains link the cities, but most parks and onsen need a car or a sparse bus. Pick one or two bases, not five.
