One day in Ho Chi Minh City: the best itinerary

One day in Ho Chi Minh City works best as a single District 1 loop: market, war history, colonial-era landmarks, then a rooftop at sunset. Everything below sits within about 4 km of Ben Thanh Market, so you can walk most of it and take a Grab for the rest.

If you only have one day, do the morning block first — the War Remnants Museum and Reunification Palace are the two stops most people regret skipping, and both are quieter before 10am.

The route below runs west to east across District 1. Ben Thanh Market is the anchor; the War Remnants Museum is about 1.5 km northwest, the Reunification Palace roughly 700 m east of that, and Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office another 600 m northeast. Dong Khoi Street, where most of the lunch and rooftop options sit, runs back toward the river.

Start early. Ho Chi Minh City is hot and humid most of the year, and the middle of the day is the worst time to be walking between sights. Do the outdoor stops before 10am and after 4pm, and put the museums in the middle.

Use Grab or a metered taxi (Mai Linh, Vinasun) rather than unmarked cars. Agree the meter or the app fare before you get in. Short hops across District 1 usually cost a few tens of thousands of đồng.

Carry small notes. Vendors and drivers rarely have change for ₫500,000. Tipping is not expected; round up for good service.

Watch your phone and bag in crowded market areas. Keep it in a front pocket or zipped bag, and don't hold it out while walking.
