Before you start
Welcome to the Bến Nghé (Đồng Khởi core) audio walk in Ho Chi Minh City. 4 stops: Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, Saigon Central Post Office, Ho Chi Minh City Museum and Saigon Opera House. The colonial core on foot: cathedral, post office, City Hall and Opera House are 10 minutes apart; walk it before 10:00 or after 16:30 and shelter in a mall at noon.
Old District 1 between Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai (north), Hàm Nghi (south), Hai Bà Trưng / the river (east) and Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa (west). Since 2025 this is Sài Gòn ward on official addresses (check). Underfoot: wide pavements on the boulevards, parked motorbikes on side streets; slope: flat; shade: medium.
Saigon in five chapters: a Khmer port turned colonial capital, a wartime capital, a renamed city that never took the new name to heart, and the country's economic engine.
Before you start: Do not fly drones over the People's Committee building (City Hall) or the Independence Palace area. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon
Nhà thờ Đức Bà Sài Gòn
Look for
- Façade and twin towers
- Virgin Mary statue on the square
Stop 1 of 4: Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon. Locally, Nhà thờ Đức Bà Sài Gòn. Arrival point: Công xã Paris square.
A 10-minute outside stop paired with the post office: the red-brick façade is under long restoration and the interior is closed to visitors outside Mass (check).
Look for Façade and twin towers: Built 1877–1880 with bricks shipped from Marseille; the spires were added in 1895. Look for Virgin Mary statue on the square: Granite statue of 1959, the focus of a 2005 'tears' crowd.
Mass times: no photography inside during services. Wedding and graduation photo shoots all day; quietest before 08:00. Go before 09:00 for photos without scaffolding crowds and wedding shoots. Stand at the post office steps for the full façade. Can I go inside? During the restoration visitors are generally not admitted outside Mass; check the notice board. Shoes on.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Saigon Central Post Office. It's about 2 minutes on foot, about 100 metres to the east. Route: Cross the square. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

2. Saigon Central Post Office
Bưu điện Trung tâm Sài Gòn
Look for
- Main hall
- Painted maps
- Hồ Chí Minh portrait
Stop 2 of 4: Saigon Central Post Office. Locally, Bưu điện Trung tâm Sài Gòn. Arrival point: 2 Công xã Paris, facing the cathedral.
Free, 20 minutes, and a working post office: see the iron-vaulted hall and the old maps, send a postcard, and use it as the cool stop between cathedral and Book Street.
Look for Main hall: Built 1886–1891; iron vaulting, arched windows, wooden phone booths. Look for Painted maps: Southern Vietnam and Cambodia around 1892, and Saigon's telegraph lines. Look for Hồ Chí Minh portrait: Over the far end of the hall.
Before the 17th century this was Prey Nokor, a Khmer port on the Saigon River. French forces took Saigon in 1859 and made it the capital of the colony of Cochinchina. From 1955 to 1975 Saigon was the capital of the Republic of Vietnam, swollen by refugees and US spending.
Tour groups 09:00–11:30 and 14:00–16:00.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Ho Chi Minh City Museum. It's about 8 minutes on foot, about 450 metres to the south. Route: Walk south on Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Ho Chi Minh City Museum
Bảo tàng Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh (Dinh Gia Long)
Look for
- Gia Long palace building
- Bunker tunnels
- Aircraft and vehicles in the grounds
Stop 3 of 4: Ho Chi Minh City Museum. Locally, Bảo tàng Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh (Dinh Gia Long). Arrival point: 65 Lý Tự Trọng.
The rain-hour museum of the core: a 1890 governor's palace with city history, old currency and a wedding-photo staircase; 45 minutes.
Look for Gia Long palace building: Built 1885–1890 as a French commerce museum, later a governor's and president's residence. Look for Bunker tunnels: Tunnels under the building linked it to the palace; entrances are closed, a section is shown (check). Look for Aircraft and vehicles in the grounds: Including the car used by President Diệm.
Wedding shoots on the staircase and lawns, especially weekends. Good between 11:00 and 15:00 when the streets are hottest. Pay at the gate, walk the ground floor, then upstairs. Is it worth it if I saw the Independence Palace? Only for a rain or heat break; it is quieter and cheaper, with different history.
Walk:Next, stop 4: Saigon Opera House. It's about 6 minutes on foot, about 350 metres to the east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
4. Saigon Opera House
Nhà hát Thành phố
Look for
- 1900 façade
- Performances
Stop 4 of 4: Saigon Opera House. Locally, Nhà hát Thành phố. Arrival point: Lam Sơn square, top of Đồng Khởi.
See it from outside in the evening light, and go in only for a show: the contemporary circus-dance performances in English-friendly format are the way to see the hall.
Look for 1900 façade: Belle-époque front modelled on the Petit Palais; lit after dark. Look for Performances: Contemporary acrobatic-dance shows on village life run on many evenings (check the programme); ballet and concerts on others.
Evening crowds on the steps and the Nguyễn Huệ side from 18:00. Photograph from the Caravelle and Continental hotel corners at dusk. Book show tickets a day or two ahead in the high season (Dec–Apr). Can I tour the inside? Not on a regular schedule; buy a show ticket to see the hall.
End of the walk
