Hirosaki is a castle town in western Aomori, the old seat of the Tsugaru clan, and the apple capital of Japan. It sits on the JR Ōu Main Line between Aomori and Akita, so it works as a stop rather than a base. The castle park holds 5,000 cherry trees and a three-storey tower; the temple streets and the Neputa festival fill the rest of a day.

Get around
The city is spread out and buses radiate from JR Hirosaki station; Konan Bus runs the local network and takes Suica and other IC cards. The castle park is about 15 min by bus to Shiyakusho-mae, or a 30-min walk. Taxis queue at the station.

Scams and watch-outs
- Winter brings heavy snow and ice; many sights and the castle tower keep seasonal hours.
- The castle tower has been moved on its site for stone-wall repairs: check what is open before you go.
- Neputa week (early August) sells out beds in Hirosaki and Aomori; book months ahead.
- Small restaurants and the Tsugaru cuisine group take reservations only, sometimes in Japanese.
- Rural buses run a few times a day: check the last return before you set out.
Hirosaki is a small, safe city; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, snow-blocked rural buses and bars with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
