Hereford is a compact cathedral city on the river Wye and the county town of Herefordshire, close to the Welsh border. The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about ten minutes, so the sights fit into a single day. Most travellers come for the cathedral and its medieval map, then use the city as a base for cider country, the Wye valley and the Black Mountains.

Get around

Walk. Central Hereford is pedestrianised around High Town and no more than about 600 m across, so everything in this guide is within a 15-minute walk. Three separate bus stations (Bewell Street, St Peter's Square and Commercial Road) serve the county; check which one your route leaves from. Beryl hire bikes exist but are poorly maintained, and there is little cycle infrastructure.
