Helsinki airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

The train is the answer for almost everyone. Helsinki-Vantaa sits on the ring rail line, so the P and I commuter trains run between the airport and Helsinki Central station roughly every 10–20 minutes, take about 30 minutes and cost a few euros. You do not need to book ahead and you do not need to change trains.

Take a taxi when you land after the last convenient train, when you have more luggage than you can roll, or when your hotel is well outside the centre. Agree the price or use a fixed-price airport taxi rather than a metered street cab.

The P and I trains both serve the airport and both end up at Helsinki Central, so you can take whichever comes first. They run in a loop through the northern suburbs, which is why the ride is longer than a straight line on a map. Trains are step-free at the airport station, and the station is inside the terminal complex, reached by lift or escalator from arrivals.

At Helsinki Central you are on the metro, tram and bus network, and the main long-distance platforms for Tampere, Turku and the Lapland night trains are in the same building. If your hotel is in Kamppi, Kallio or around the design district, a tram or a 10–20 minute walk from the station usually beats a taxi.

Taxis wait outside arrivals. Finland regulates taxi pricing, but since deregulation different companies charge differently, so ask for the price before you get in or book a fixed-price airport transfer. Rideshare apps work at Helsinki-Vantaa but pick-up points can be a short walk from the terminal. Buses and long-distance coaches also stop at the airport, which matters if you are heading straight to Turku, Tampere or Porvoo rather than into Helsinki.

The train is by far the cheapest way in and the price depends on how many HSL zones you cross; the airport and the centre are in different zones, so expect a few euros rather than a single flat fare. Children and students usually pay less. A taxi costs roughly ten times the train fare, so it only makes sense when it saves you a real problem.

If you are in Helsinki for several days, a multi-day HSL ticket covers the airport train as well as trams, buses, the metro and the Suomenlinna ferry, which can be better value than single tickets. Buy it at the airport or in the app.

Landing late is the main reason people overpay. The trains keep running overnight, but gaps between services get longer, so check the last convenient departure for your terminal before you commit to a taxi.

Winter changes the maths. Snow and ice slow road traffic more than rail, so on a January or February trip the train is the more reliable choice even if a taxi looks faster on paper. In summer, the walk from Central station to a centre hotel is often quicker than waiting in a taxi queue.

If you are continuing north to Lapland, you can go from the airport to Helsinki Central and straight onto a night train the same evening, but leave a buffer of a few hours in case your flight is late.
