Best day trips from Havana: how to get there and what to see

Distances are road distances from central Havana and are approximate. Times assume a working vehicle and no fuel stop; in 2026 both are uncertain, so treat every figure as a planning number, not a promise.

Viñales is the one day trip most travellers rate highest: a flat-bottomed valley of limestone mogotes, tobacco drying barns and farm visits, with cave and viewpoint stops on the way. A day trip gives you the valley floor and one cave; two nights gives you sunrise walks and a farm lunch. If you only have one free day in Havana, this is the one to spend it on.

Varadero is a long strip of resort beach on the north coast. Day-trippers get the sand and the sea but not much else — the town behind the hotels is small. Go early, swim before the afternoon wind, and leave before the return traffic builds. If you want a beach day without a car, this is the easiest to arrange through a hotel or a shared taxi.

Soroa sits in the hills west of Havana, on the same road as Viñales. The waterfall and the orchid garden make a half-day, and you can combine it with a stop at the Bay of Pigs area if you have a private car. It is the shortest drive of the four and the easiest to do on a whim.

The Bay of Pigs (Playa Girón) is for history and water: a small museum on the 1961 invasion, a snorkelling reef close to shore, and a cenote for swimming. It is a long day — 5–6 hours of driving in total — so it works best as an overnight stop on the way to Cienfuegos or Trinidad.

Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba are not day trips from Havana. Each is 4–6 hours away by road, and transport in 2026 is unreliable enough that a same-day return risks stranding you. Treat them as overnight stops on a longer route.

There is no reliable public bus network for tourists, so day trips run on shared cars (colectivos), tourist minibuses, private taxis or organised tours. Shared seats are the cheapest and the most variable: you pay per person and wait until the car fills. A private car costs several times more but leaves when you want and waits for you.

Budget for entry fees, a meal and drinks on top of the fare. Carry small notes: change is scarce, and drivers rarely have it. Cards issued by non-US banks sometimes work in Havana hotels and larger restaurants, but assume cash for everything outside the city.
