Hanoi on a budget: cheap food, stays and free sights

Hanoi is one of the cheapest big cities in Southeast Asia to spend a day in, and the budget version is not a compromise: the street food that costs ₫40,000–70,000 a bowl is the same food locals queue for. The money you save on beds and meals is best spent on one paid experience, such as a water puppet ticket or a day trip, rather than on a fancier hotel.

Base yourself in or within walking distance of the Old Quarter and Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Almost everything a first-time visitor wants — markets, food streets, the lake circuit, the weekend night market — sits inside a 2 km walk, which removes transport from the daily budget entirely. Hostels here run ₫200,000–400,000 for a dorm bed; a private room in a basic guesthouse or 2–3★ hotel starts around ₫450,000–800,000.

Figures below are 2026 estimates per person, in VND, and follow the same bands used across the Vietnam pages. Sharing a room at mid and comfort tiers is assumed; flights, visas, cruises and tours are not included. Hanoi sits at the cheaper end of the country, so treat these as workable rather than tight.

Opening hours for individual stalls and sights change often and are not listed here as fixed facts — check on the day. As a rule, food stalls run from early morning to mid-morning for phở, midday for rice plates, and evening for grills and bia hơi; most temples and museums keep daytime hours and close one day a week.

Hanoi is the northern base for most Vietnam itineraries, and the arrival choice sets your first-day cost. Nội Bài International Airport (HAN) is about 35 km from the centre; the cheapest way in is the public bus, with airport minibuses and taxis or Grab cars costing more. Domestic flights from Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and other cities land at the same airport, and a one-way domestic flight with a bag is around ₫1,800,000 as a planning figure. Trains from the south and from the Chinese border arrive at Gia Lâm or Hà Nội station, both walkable or a short Grab ride from the Old Quarter. The single biggest saving in Hanoi is walking. The Old Quarter, the lake and the food streets form a compact grid, and a Grab bike for 5 km costs about ₫60,000–100,000 — cheap, but it adds up if you take one for every meal. Pick a bed near the lake and you can cut transport to near zero.

Second: eat where locals eat. A stall bowl at ₫40,000–70,000 beats a tourist-menu restaurant on both price and quality, and the turnover means fresher food. Third: carry small VND notes. ATMs are common in the city but withdrawal limits are low and fees vary, so take out larger amounts less often and break them at markets and convenience stores. Ride-hailing apps show the fare upfront and take cards in-app, which avoids cash and haggling.

Watch the calendar. Tết week adds 20–50% and closes many stalls, so a trip planned around it needs a bigger budget and confirmed bookings. Shoulder-season months outside Tết week and the summer peak are generally the cheapest for beds.
