Hanoi in October: what to expect

October is the pivot month in the north. The southwest monsoon has finished, humidity falls and the grey, wet days of July–September give way to cooler air from the north. Days are usually warm rather than hot, evenings need a light layer, and the light is clearer than at any other time of year.

Expect a mix: bright, dry stretches of several days, broken by a short spell of rain or drizzle. Rain in October is usually brief and not the afternoon downpours of summer. The tail of the typhoon season can still reach the north coast, which matters mainly if you have booked a Hạ Long overnight — keep one spare day in the plan.

Compared with the rest of the year, October sits in the 'best' band for the north on the site's Vietnam climate map, alongside November, December and April.

October is the quiet month before the northern high season. Hotel rates in the old quarter and around Hoàn Kiếm are at their lowest of the good-weather months, and you can usually book a day or two ahead rather than weeks. Tours to Hạ Long, Ninh Bình and Sa Pa also run cheaper and with smaller groups.

The exception is the very end of the month, when word gets out and the first winter travellers arrive. If your dates are fixed to late October, book the Hạ Long cruise and any train seats early. Mid-October is the sweet spot: good weather, thin crowds, low prices.

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls in September or early October depending on the lunar calendar, and its lantern evenings in the old quarter can spill into the first days of the month — check the exact date for your year. It is not a public holiday, so shops and museums stay open.

October has no major national holiday, which is one reason it stays quiet. The next fixed date is Vietnam Culture Day on 24 November, a public holiday added in 2026, so it does not affect October travel.

October is the month to use Hanoi as a base for the north. Hạ Long Bay is at its most reliable for overnight cruises, with calmer seas and better visibility than in summer. Ninh Bình's river and karst valleys are green after the rains and comfortable to cycle. Sa Pa and the northern hills are cooler and clearer, though nights start to bite — pack a fleece.

In the city, the old quarter, Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Temple of Literature are all walkable in October heat. This is also a good month for the longer day trips that are miserable in summer humidity.

Do not extend the same plan to central Vietnam. Hội An and Huế are in their flood season in October, so if you want both north and centre, fly rather than rely on a fixed itinerary.

Pack for a warm day and a cool evening. Light long sleeves and trousers cover both, and a thin rain shell handles the odd shower without weighing you down. Comfortable walking shoes matter more here than anywhere else in Vietnam, because the old quarter is best on foot.

Add a small umbrella or packable rain jacket, sun protection for the clear days, and a light fleece if Sa Pa or a Hạ Long overnight is on the plan — nights on the water are noticeably cooler than the city.

September is still wet and typhoon-prone in the north, though conditions improve late in the month. November is nearly as good as October, slightly cooler and busier, with the central floods at their peak. December brings dry, cool days and the Christmas–New Year price jump.

If October does not fit your dates, November is the closest substitute for Hanoi itself; if you want the centre as well, aim for March or April instead.
