  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Hoàn Kiếm Lake & French Quarter audio walk in Hanoi. 4 stops: Ngọc Sơn Temple, St Joseph's Cathedral, Hỏa Lò Prison Memorial and Thăng Long Water Puppet Theatre. Sunrise cluster: lake loop before 07:00 with the tai-chi crowd, Ngọc Sơn temple at opening, the French Quarter boulevards after; flat and shaded.

The lake loop, Ngọc Sơn, Tràng Tiền and the Opera House. Underfoot: paved lakeside; slope: flat; shade: high.

Hà Nội has been a capital, on and off, for more than a thousand years, and it keeps every layer on show: a Lý-era citadel under a French barracks, guild streets beside colonial boulevards, Soviet-style blocks behind café terraces.

Before you start: Weekend evenings: the lake streets are pedestrian-only; cars drop at the edge. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Ngọc Sơn Temple

    Đền Ngọc Sơn

Stop 1 of 4: Ngọc Sơn Temple. Locally, Đền Ngọc Sơn. Arrival point: Đinh Tiên Hoàng street, north-east shore of Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

Cross the red Thê Húc bridge at opening, before the tour groups; 20–30 minutes; pair it with the lake loop at sunrise.

Dress modestly; lower your voice at the altar. Quiet at opening; groups from 09:00; very busy on weekend evenings. Lower your voice and do not point your feet at the altar if you sit. Is there an entry fee? Yes, a small fee at the bridge gate; bring cash (check the posted price). How long do I need? 20–30 minutes, then carry on around the lake. Shoes on.

Walk:Next, stop 2: St Joseph's Cathedral. It's about 10 minutes on foot, about 450 metres to the south-west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. St Joseph's Cathedral

    Nhà thờ Lớn Hà Nội

Stop 2 of 4: St Joseph's Cathedral. Locally, Nhà thờ Lớn Hà Nội. Arrival point: Nhà Chung street, 5 min west of Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

Neo-Gothic cathedral five minutes west of the lake: see the façade and the square; entry to the interior depends on mass times.

Quiet during services; dress modestly. Busy square in the evening (lemon-tea stalls). During mass, stay at the back and do not photograph the congregation. Can I go inside? Mostly around mass times; the side door is sometimes open. Dress modestly and stay quiet during services. Where can I sit with a coffee? Cafés around the square face the cathedral; lemon tea on the pavement is the local habit.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Hỏa Lò Prison Memorial. It's about 9 minutes on foot, about 450 metres to the south-west. Route: Walk south on Thợ Nhuộm. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Hỏa Lò Prison Memorial

Di tích Nhà tù Hỏa Lò

Stop 3 of 4: Hỏa Lò Prison Memorial. Locally, Di tích Nhà tù Hỏa Lò. Arrival point: Hỏa Lò street, 10 min south-west of the lake.

The prison museum from the French colonial era to the war: an hour indoors, a good midday heat bailout; heavy subject matter.

Tour groups mid-morning. A memorial: keep voices low in the cell blocks. How long does a visit take? About an hour. The audio guide adds 20–30 minutes. Is it suitable for children? Older children with an adult; some displays of cells and a guillotine are graphic.

Walk:Next, stop 4: Thăng Long Water Puppet Theatre. It's about 20 minutes on foot, about 1.0 km to the north-east. Route: Walk along the lake. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  5. 4. Thăng Long Water Puppet Theatre

Nhà hát Múa rối Thăng Long

Stop 4 of 4: Thăng Long Water Puppet Theatre. Locally, Nhà hát Múa rối Thăng Long. Arrival point: Đinh Tiên Hoàng street, north-east corner of Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

Timed 45–50 minute shows on the lake's north-east corner: book a seat for an evening show; this is a hard anchor, not a walk-in.

In 1010 King Lý Thái Tổ moved his court from the mountain stronghold of Hoa Lư to this riverside plain and, tradition holds, named it Thăng Long, ‘ascending dragon’, after seeing a dragon rise over the river. For the next eight centuries Thăng Long was the political and scholarly centre of the country. The Old Quarter’s spiritual guardian is Bạch Mã temple on Hàng Buồm, one of four temples that, by tradition, protected the four directions of Thăng Long; the others are Quán Thánh to the north, Voi Phục to the west and Kim Liên to the south.

Evening shows sell out in high season. Numbered seats; arrive 15 minutes early or the seat may be resold.
